The story is told from the perspective of 15-year-old Julia Reyes as she navigates her grief and struggles with mental health, her familial relationships, and cultural expectations when her older sister Olga unexpectedly dies.

Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo

Clap When You Land follows Camino and Yahaira Rios, sisters living on different continents and who are unaware of one another's existence. When the plane their father is on crashes, Camino and Yahaira's lives are upended, and they are put on a path that will inevitably lead them to one another.

Rating: 3.6

"The story was overall good, but the pacing of it was a bit slow." When asked if they would read more by this author the group was split.

The Grace Year by Kim Liggett

A rebellious 16-year-old is sent to an isolated island for her grace year, when she must release her seductive, poisonous magic into the wild before taking her proper place as a wife and child bearer. In gaslit Garner County, women and girls are said to harbor diabolical magic capable of manipulating men.

Rating: 4.5

The group thought the book was okay. They were not a fan of the pacing of the book. They said it started off quick, and then slowed down significantly in the middle. The ending was a little lackluster for the group. When asked if they would read another book by this author. They unanimously said yes.

Here are the selections for the 2023-2024 school year! Starting Thursday, September 21, 2023. Students in grades 9-12 are invited to join the BHS Book Club. We meet every 3rd Thursday of the month in Mrs. Heiter's class at 12:00 PM (HS Lunch). A Very Large Expanse of Sea by Tahereh Mafi

Set in 2002, A Very Large Expanse Of Sea takes readers on a whimsically clever and humorous love story between two Americans who come from different backgrounds. Shirin, a 16-year-old Muslim girl living in post 9/11 America, and Ocean James, her lab partner who takes a genuine interest in getting to know her.

Rating: 3.1

The group thought the book was okay. They were not fans of the ending. They enjoyed talking to the members that were there when 9/11 happened.

Five Feet Apart by Rachael Lippincott

FIVE FEET APART is about two teens with cystic fibrosis (CF) dealing with first love and the uncertainty of their futures. Stella's an organized achiever who has her life in order and manages her medications and treatments efficiently.

Rating: 3.3

Readers thought that it was a quick read. Many had seen the movie prior to reading the book. Without realizing it was a book first.

The Fountains of Silence by Ruta Sepetys

The Fountains of Silence takes place in 1957, during the rule of General Francisco Franco. Spain is hiding a dark secret–they are taking away babies of Republican families and giving them to Franco's supporters and telling these families that their babies have died.

Rating: 3.91

In the month of February the BHS Book Club met to discuss The Fountains of Silence by Ruta SepetysThe group overall enjoyed the book. One students even stated "I like historical fiction now, because of this book." Though the book started off slow. It did pick up more towards the end. When asked if they would read more books by this author. The group said yes.

The New David Espinoza by Fred Aceves

David Espinoza is tired of being messed with. When a video of him getting knocked down by a bully's slap goes viral at the end of junior year, David vows to use the summer to bulk up— do what it takes to become a man—and wow everyone when school starts again the fall.

In the month of February the BHS Book Club met to discuss The New David Espinoza by Fred Aceves. The group enjoyed reading a book about a new perspective of the body image world. When asked if they would read more books by this author it was a unanimous yes.
