Teens' Top Ten 2023

What are The Teens' Top Ten?

The Teens' Top Ten is a "teen choice" list, where teens nominate and choose their favorite books of the previous year! Nominators are members of teen book groups in fifteen school and public libraries around the country. Nominations are posted on the Thursday of National Library Week, and teens across the country vote on their favorite titles each year.

“All My Rage” is a love story, a tragedy and an infectious teenage fever dream about what home means when you feel you don't fit in. Noor, who was born in Pakistan but emigrated as a child after her family was killed in a tragic accident, yearns for a culture that she never got a chance to fully know.

Gideon Green in Black and White by Katie Henry

Parents need to know that Gideon Green in Black and White is a coming-of-age story, by Katie Henry (This Will Be Funny Someday), about a 16-year-old teen detective in Southern California who loves film noir and stumbles across a dead body while helping a girl who's writing a story for the high school paper.

Seventeen-year-old Cristian Florescu dreams of becoming a writer, but Romanians aren't free to dream; they are bound by rules and force. Amidst the tyrannical dictatorship of Nicolae Ceaușescu in a country governed by isolation and fear, Cristian is blackmailed by the secret police to become an informer.

Man Made Monsters by Andrea L. Rogers

A creepy and artful exploration of a haunting heritage. A chilling story collection following a sprawling Cherokee family through many generations. Starting with Ama Wilson in 1839 and ending in 2039, this spooky speculative assortment features stories from times historical, present, and yet to come.

The Door of No Return is incredibly gripping and harrowing story of 11 year old Kofi Offin who is stolen from his village of Upper Kwanta and sold into slavery. It's so hard not to fall in love with Kofi and as his innocence as he navigates school life much like any other child and even has a crush along the way.

Jay is living his best life at Karloff Country, one of the world's most famous resorts. He's got his family, his crew, and an incredible after-school job at the property's main theme park. Life isn't so great for the rest of the world, but when people come here to vacation, it's to get away from all that.

This year, Shim Cheong is due to be sacrificed, and Mina, the younger sister of Shim Cheong's lover, ends up sacrificing herself and throws her body into the ocean before Shim Cheong can make it. Mina is our protagonist, and she ends up immediately finding the Red String of Fate that connects her to the Sea God.

The Life and Crimes of Hoodie Rosen by Isaac Blum

Hoodie Rosen's life isn't that bad. Sure, his entire Orthodox Jewish community has just picked up and moved to the quiet, mostly non-Jewish town of Tregaron, but Hoodie's world hasn't changed that much. He's got basketball to play, studies to avoid, and a supermarket full of delicious kosher snacks to eat. The people of Tregaron aren’t happy that so many Orthodox Jews are moving in at once, but that’s not Hoodie’s problem.

That is, until he meets and falls for Anna-Marie Diaz-O’Leary—who happens to be the daughter of the headstrong mayor trying to keep Hoodie’s community out of the town. And things only get more complicated when Tregaron is struck by a series of antisemitic crimes that quickly escalate to deadly violence.

As his community turns on him for siding with the enemy, Hoodie finds himself caught between his first love and the only world he’s ever known.

The Summer of Bitter and Sweet by Jen Fergusen

Parents need to know that The Summer of Bitter and Sweet is about Lou, an 18-year-old indigenous Canadian woman's discoveries about herself, her family, and her identity over the summer before she goes off to college. A beating and rape in the past is a core part of the story, and it's vaguely described once.

Once every decade The Sunbearer Trials take place to choose the best semidios (demigods) who keeps the sun stone fueled and ensure the safety of the world for next ten years. Gold semidioses are strongest and most powerful and for many years only they are selected to compete in the trials
